From News Center (Text by Wei Tiancheng and Lu Yizhong from Publicity Department of the Student Union, Photos by Qin Chunlin, Qiu Yufan, Liang Zhihong and Lu Meilan from Publicity Department of the Student Union) "Where does the Dragon Boat Festival originate? The predecessors said it was for Qu Yuan." The Dragon Boat Festival is the first Chinese traditional festival listed as a world's intangible cultural heritage. It is one of the greatest historic and cultural treasures of Chinese civilization. On June 25, 2020, the CYL Committee of LVTC organized a cultural event themed "Promoting the Traditional Culture, Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival" in Shewan and Guantang Campus, with the aim to propagate the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival to the young students and promote traditional Chinese culture. Despite of the bad weather, the students enthusiastically participated in the activities as guided by the organizers from the Student Union.

Wearing perfume sachets on the Dragon Boat Festival is believed to be able to ward off evil and exorcise plague; it is also an ornament on clothing. Materials for making sachets were provided on the site, so that the participants can make their own sachets by hand. It was a special time when COVID-19 pandemic still existed both in and out of China. The students made wormwood sachets to express their hope and confidence in overcoming the virus as well as their wishes to keep everyone safe and healthy.

The activity also comprised of quiz of knowledge about the Dragon Boat Festival, lantern riddles, Zongzi fishing, dragon ball handling, egg painting, and other small funny games. The students participated with high spirits in the tent or under umbrellas. It was a good opportunity to experience the festival customs and understand traditional culture.

In the end, everyone wrote their hopes and wishes on the message board.

The event not only enriched the students’extra-curriculum life, but also created a healthy, harmonious cultural atmosphere on the campus, giving them a relaxing, happy festival even in the quarantine period at school; it also promoted the excellent Chinese traditional culture, strengthened the cultivation and practice of the core socialist values among our young students, and enhanced their patriotic thoughts and emotions.

In the future, the college's CYL Committee will continue guiding LVTC students to take the responsibility to promote and inherit the excellent traditional Chinese culture as part of all campus cultural programs, so that everyone will establish firm "cultural confidence" with practical actions to contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
